Proof of concept:
In a study by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Sam Schwartz Consulting found that asphalt art in the right-of-way significantly improves street safety and encourages drivers to slow down and be more alert.
Key Findings of the Study
- 50% drop in crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists.
- 37% drop in crashes leading to injuries.
- 17% decrease in total overall crashes.
- 27% increase in drivers yielding to pedestrians who have the right-of-way.
- 25% decrease in dangerous conflicts between drivers and pedestrians.
- Better visibility: Colorful crosswalks and intersection murals make pedestrian spaces easier for drivers to see.
- Visual narrowing: Designs can make wide streets or intersections feel tighter, which naturally forces drivers to reduce their speed.
- Driver awareness: Visual changes break up the monotony of the road and alert drivers that they are entering a shared public space.
